Sprayberry Enamel Earrings – one-of-a-kind art jewelry for your ears.
These earrings are among the first from my new venture with vitreous enamel. Recently I had a hunch that I might enjoy working with enamel, so I ordered a few colors just to see. I was right! It’s extremely gratifying to watch the glass particles fuse to the copper and produce a beautiful, colorful finish.
These earrings were made by cutting rectangle shapes from copper sheet metal and giving them a slight concave shape with a hammer and mandrel. I also punched the holes for ear wires using a special tool. I sifted a dark “counter” enamel to the back side of the earrings, which helps protect the enamel on the front as the metal heats and contracts under the flame. Next I sifted a mustard yellow enamel onto the front side and fired them again. Then I sifted the red color on top and scratched the design into the enamel, which revealed the yellow underneath. This required one last firing with the torch. Lastly, I attached sterling silver ear wires, which I carefully round on the ends to protect your ears.
The design on each earring is similar to the other but intentionally different.
Each little surface is treated by my two hands.
Any flecks of white shown on top of the earrings are reflections only. The enamel shines!
